Sound of Music

Picture this. A glorious Sunday afternoon....hearty lunch of delicious gourmet pasta...prepared by the best chef in the world, hubby dearest. To round off this perfect Sunday afternoon decided to curl up on the couch and watch  a movie or in this case, the musical extravaganza "SOUND OF MUSIC". I have grown up on the renditions of "Raindrops and roses ", "Hills are Alive" and "Do re mi " from this movie. My favourite track was "I am sixteen going on seventeen " and i would hum this, subtly replacing the lyrics with my then current age. Hubby dearest had missed out the influence of this epic film during his growing years, and so i decided to regale him with it.

The titles started to roll and i squealed out in delight, as the movie is shot in Salzburg (Austria) where hubby and myself had gone for a ski trip. Childhood memories tend to be sporadic, memories strewn around in the mind in random bits and pieces.Things that make sense are processed and registered ,ones beyond comprehension are tucked away.As an adult one tries to round off these snatches to form a complete picture, like a jigsaw puzzle.Similarly, as i watched the movie now, i realised i had never gotten around to seeing the complete film.I had been a regular member of the choir in my various schools and watching "Sound of Music" was the implied extracurricular activity one needed to do, to familiarise oneself with the various sound tracks in the film, considering they were a favourite with music conductors.Given my impatient disposition, i must have drifted off after viewing my favourite songs, and the serious bit(read Nazi) had begun. The funny thing is, when we were in Salzburg,i had no clue that the scenic visions i had seen in the film as a child, were shot here. It is true, everything does look much bigger on celluloid, compounded by the fact that the world looks bigger when you are a tiny version of your self. My poor hubby had to bear the brunt of my frequent bursts of my sing along with the characters, the subsequent audio distress somehow muted by the joy of spotting familiar places of our trip,on screen.

The baby gooses, correctly identifying the general state of high spirits, decided to pitch in with some musical notes of their own. So Nayani came and perched herself onto my lap as i rendered out "a few of my favourite things".She peered with a lot of interest at the screen trying to match my bellowing with the lovely characters on screen. Yasho took his turn as "Do re mi " pelted out and even joined in with "Baaa" as the song "Goodbye " came on. Guess when we look back, i can tell my kids that this was the first movie they watched with their mama goose.

Movies have a definitive impression on growing minds and i am glad my little tots have begun their tryst with celluloid with the "Sound of Music".
