Today i was out for my morning walk with a dear friend who's expecting her second child.She asked me "Yaar ...are baby boys easier to manage than girls?what differences do you see in your babies given one is a girl and other is a boy". That threw me off. The thing is, both my babies are as different as chalk and cheese in EVERYTHING.Their food pallets are different, their milestones are different, even their moods and preferences on a day to day basis are pretty much varied all the time.The only thing that they share with each other in common, is their mutual love for their mama, as at any given point they prefer being curled up in mamas arms hands down over any other activity. This in turn has led to many a war cries and many an insistent pat on each others head when the other is nestled with their mommy.However, their differences i had attributed to their unique personalities and dispositions and not due to the obvious difference in gender. Having to look at it through gender specific glasses would take some amount of introspection and very vigil mental note taking on my part.Another point that needs to be considered also in the case of my twins is that they were born with very different birth weights. So my boy who is older by a minute and born 700 gms heavier than my daughter has pretty much trail blazed through his milestone chart.My daughter has been following him steadfastly albeit at her own pace. So in their case, he is pretty much setting up the behavioral model which my daughter sits observing in her leisure time( pretty much like one would watch a matinee show of a circus) and picks and choose what she would like to emulate.
Y(He):
Loves liquids: be it juices, buttermilk, dal. Any water based activity tops the chart for him.
N(She):
Prefers to consume solids: parathas,veggies, poha.It's a challenge to get her to drink any water but loves her bath time.
Y(He):
He prefers being fed with a spoon.Anything fed by hand is instantly spat out.A fork is an incing on the cake. So pasta takes the top honours as a favoured food, as each fettuccine when appended to a fork ,is instantly gobbled up.
N(She):
She prefers being fed with my hand and does not like the use of a spoon at all while feeding.Forget a fork!!
Y(He):
He loves his independence and hates handholding of any kind. Wants to eat his own with the fork and the spoon ensconced in his hand.Prefers to be not touched when he is mounted himself on his scooter, even at the cost of tumbling down all the time and resulting into high pitched bawling.
N(She):
She does not mind being pushed around her little scooter and must i say quite likes my warmth surrounding her all the time.Mama's lil girl.
Y(He):
Deep , deep sleeper quite like mama and must i say a nocturnal roller too ...pretty much from one end of the crib to another
N(She): Light sleeper ,quite like her papa and pretty much stays put in one position in her lil crib.
Y(He):
Loves to see the effect falling objects have on the surface of the earth, the accompanying sound effect is a bonus.So he keeps regaling us with toys , glasses , food strewn around especially from from the vantage point of his high chair. Little Newton !!!!
N(She):
Prefers to use things the way they were created to be used. However, some winds of change brewing from very close quarters might throw ideas in my lil lady's head. Watching with bated breath. One pile of strewn stuff is a handful to clean, second one might make the nanny quit!
Y(He):
Not a favourite with the nannies, as you can imagine from the above mentioned points. Have to motivate the staff that the one who takes care of my lil boy does only that. No other peripheral pieces of work required.
N(She):
She is the favoured one. There is pretty much a mad dash for her when the baby management duty begins , which has also resulted in a downside that some milestones got a lil delayed.I have to literally keep yelling at the nanny to leave her alone and let her be.
Y(He):
Loves the outdoors and very vocal about his likes and dislikes.
N(She):
Loves the outdoors too but quite happy indoors as well.Not quite so vocal yet about her likes and dislikes, except again, when she wants to be with her mama.
Y(He):
Easy to distract.Just wave a random hand and shout "pigeons" and lo and behold the tear spewing issue at hand is forgotten in a blink.
N(She):
Madame is a different story altogether. Will not waste time spewing tears for any tom,dick and harry, but only if something is truly bothering her.Like maybe hunger, colic or mama time,in which case unless the issue is resolved she should exercise her vocal chords,quite fair me thinks...
Y(He):
Very , very attached to papa( have a sneaking feeling maybe even more so than mama, but catch me admitting that in front of hubby, no sirreee!!!!!)
N(She):
Mama , mama, all the way.....can't see papa anywhere close to the finishing line ...am sure though he is somewhere trooping in to claim second place :)
Similarities:
Both love peru( not the country , but the fruit guava) ;
raw peas;
walks in the single pram(both don't like the double pram much) ;
hoisted onto their papa's shoulder ,moment he is back from work ;
playing peekaboo ;
rolling in the blanket ;
Jerry(soft toy of the Tom &Jerry fame) ;
listening to Pandit Jasraj ;
playing frisbee and football (held in papa and mamas arms in the park)
Is it truly a boy Vs girl difference or just a personality difference?You have the list, go figure!!
Toddlers from Mars and Venus....or is it just Earth??
